County Commission Adopts new Park System Master Plan

The process to update the long range plan for Parks and Recreation in Platte County is now complete.  Begun in spring of 2008 and finalized with the adoption of the new plan on May 14, 2009, the plan covers the highest priorities for the citizens of Platte County to guide the planning, development, maintenance and operation of the park system into the future.  The implementation of this update to the Park System Master Plan presents a number of intriguing opportunities that capitalize on the enthusiasm generated by Platte County citizens for their park system.  This enthusiasm has fueled widespread support for the Guiding Principles of the new Plan:

  1. To protect our natural resources
  2. To provide health and wellness opportunities
  3. To create safe recreation places for our children

The new Plan and approach to implementing it, will be citizen-focused, sustainable, and collaborative.  Over 4,000 citizens participated in this process.  Lead by a twelve member citizens planning team, two public meetings, twenty-six focus groups, and two surveys were conducted to gain valuable feedback on what was most important to Platte Countians.  The plan contains exciting new opportunities to expand the greenway trails network, provide new wellness opportunities at the community centers, and grow our award winning system of parks.

We invite you to look through this new document and give us your feedback.  The County Commission, Board of Park Commissioners and staff of the Parks and Recreation Department look forward to serving you, the citizens of Platte County, and providing the best park system in the region to continue to make our community a great place to live, work, and play!
